World celebrities shooting music videos in Kyiv

While Ukraine is deciding which of Soviet heritage has to de-communized or demolished, foreign stars film here their best videos.

In October this year, an American pop-start Miley Cyrus visited Kyiv without the usual uproar in social networks and media coverage. Together with Mark Ronson she filmed here a music video. Who else was shooting videos in Kyiv? You will be surprised but the musicians choose some remote areas instead of city center.

Miley Cyrus and Darnytsky Bridge

A spectacular police pursuit for ‘Nothing Breaks Like a Heart’ video was filmed on the Darnytsky Bridge in October. The traffic on the bridge was temporarily blocked for this purpose.

 

Twenty One Pilots and a campus building of Taras Shevchenko National University

Last summer American rock band released three videos Jumpsuit, Nico and the Niners і Levitate. The second one was partially filmed in Kyiv. You can see a campus building of cybernetics faculty of Taras Shevchenko National University.

 

Paloma Faith, the Motherland Monument and Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine

British soul singer came to Ukraine last year to film two videos. In her Crybaby and Guilty music videos, you can see the interiors of Vernadsky National Library, National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War and the Motherland Monument. According to Paloma, huge Soviet-era buildings became perfect decorations for the dilogy about totalitarian society.

 

Korean NCT and Vernadsky National Library again

A showy building of Vernadsky National Library with round windows in the ceiling, a stained-glass socket on the facade and the winter garden served as background for a video in song ‘Boss’ of the South Korean boy-band NCT.

 

Damso and the Motherland Monument

While the gigantic statue of Motherland Monument on the right bank of the Dnieper is provoking discussions among Ukrainians about how it needs to be deconstructed, Western art are inspired by it. The Belgian rapper Damso portrayed himself on her background for a video ‘Smog.’

 

Calum Scott and the National Opera of Ukraine

British singer decided that his romantic ballade You Are The Reason needs more traditional sceneries and set off to shoot them in Kyiv. The video shows Ukraine’s National Opera, the Bell tower of Saint Sophia’s Cathedral, the night-time Khreshchatyk Street with Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square).

 

Foals і Troieshchyna

Two British Indi-rock singers Foals needed grey sleeping blocks so where else should they come, if not on in Troieshchyna? In the video also has shots of Kyiv Reservoir.

 

Nothing But Thieves and Troieshchyna again

Another British band Nothing But Thieves chose Troieshchyna as the location to shoot their video for ‘Amsterdam.’ And then made a trip on tram №8 in video for ‘Sorry’ song.

 

Hurts and Pushcha-Vodytsia sanatorium

British pop-duet Hurts just loves shooting videos in Kyiv. Their song Wings has shots of Pushcha-Vodytsia sanatorium, October Palace and Budynok Kino. Amazing video of ‘Beautiful Ones’ was also filmed in Kyiv but in less famous locations.

 

Natalie Imbruglia, Pyrohiv and Kyiv Central Railway Station

One of the first foreign singers who filmed a music video in Kyiv was the Australian star Але однією з Natalie Imbruglia. Back in 2005, she visited Pyrohiv museum, Dniper River bank, came to Central Railway Station and even made a trip in a third-class sleeper train wagon. Video thriller ‘Shiver’ was a result of this.
